Diagnostics for HC 1 and 2 Recitations

The H&C recitation diagnostics are 7-minute individual meetings to evaluate musicianship skills on the first day of class. You should give the same exam at the end of the semester as part of your final exam, so that we have a clear way to gauge student progress.

 

The students are not expected to know any of this material as a prerequisite---but they should be able to do all of it by the end of the semester.

 

We do not yet have diagnostics or exams for H&C 3&4.

H&C 1 Diagnostic

 

Singing

  • Play a note on the piano, and ask the student to match pitch.
  • Ask them to sing a major scale up and down from a given note.
  • Ask them to sing all diatonic intervals within the scale (See Jairo's exercise)
  • Give them a short diatonic (chorale) melody to sight-read. (Click here for a page on online solfege texts)

Keyboard

  • Ask them to play a major scale up and down from a given note.
  • Ask them to play one of the following root-position four-part progressions in D or Bb major, in any voicing:
    • I-IV-I
    • I-V(7)-I

Aural skills

  • Play two notes on the piano and ask them to identify the interval. Encourage them to sing the notes if that helps.
  • Play a couple triads; ask them to sing the roots and identify the quality.

H&C 2 Diagnostic

(There's some overlap between exams, for the sake of continuity.)

 

Singing 

  • Sight-read a short diatonic melody. (Click here for a page on online solfege texts)
  • Sight-read a short chromatic/modulating melody.

Keyboard

  • Play a simple four-part progression [as above]
  • Play a more complicated progression in major or minor, possibly with inversions, in a given voicing.
    • Example source progression: I-vi(7)-IV(7)-ii(7)-V(7)-I
    • Possible extracts:
      • I-vi7-ii7-V7-I6
      • i-iv6-V7-i
      • I-ii65-V7-I

Aural skills

  • Triad root and quality identification
  • Seventh chord root and quality identification
