If you had forty hours a week to teach musicianship, you could tailor the class to the particular needs of each student. But you probably have other commitments, like doing your own work, or enjoying a game of skee-ball while sampling a fine New England microbrew. I have three suggestions to reduce the burden of students who fall off the bell-curve.
- Send them to me. Part of my job description this year is to assist the floundering and to challenge the exceptional.
- Alternate between private piano lessons and group choral practice.
- Assign composition and improvisation assignments to outstanding students. This is a classic Walden (TO DO: link) trick that saves you from having to prepare (and learn!) a ton of extra material.
