Managing Different Skill Levels

Page history last edited by Alexander Ness 3 years, 9 months ago
If you had forty hours a week to teach musicianship, you could tailor the class to the particular needs of each student. But you probably have other commitments, like doing your own work, or enjoying a game of skee-ball while sampling a fine New England microbrew. I have three suggestions to reduce the burden of students who fall off the bell-curve.

  1. Send them to me. Part of my job description this year is to assist the floundering and to challenge the exceptional.
  2. Alternate between private piano lessons and group choral practice
  3. Assign composition and improvisation assignments to outstanding students. This is a classic Walden (TO DO: link) trick that saves you from having to prepare (and learn!) a ton of extra material.
